Infections generally produce symptoms such as pain, fever, redness, swelling, etc. Up to a certain extent, infection can be controlled by oral medicines or injections. But, sometimes the infection spreads very rapidly along loose tissue planes and can turn into a life-threatening condition called systemic sepsis (infection within the blood). And this is the worst outcome of any infection. Before the infection progresses to the extent of systemic sepsis and creates a life-threatening situation, we always have a chance to halt its progress, down-regulate the infection, and lessen the life risk.

This is the place where the plastic surgeon’s role is extremely important. Because of their sound knowledge of anatomy, experience in managing extensive infections, and surgical expertise to effectively remove the infected tissues and reconstruct them later on; a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon is the best person to manage these infections. If a plastic surgeon’s opinion is sought from the very beginning of the infection, it is possible to cure the infection before it progresses to extensive levels.
