What is circumcision surgery?

Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin, (the skin that covers the tip of the penis), and it's a procedure that can be performed on males at any age—from infants to adults. At Cutis Hospital, we approach this common yet delicate surgery with the utmost care, tailoring our methods to suit patients across different life stages.

Benefits of Circumcision Surgery

Circumcision is chosen for many reasons, such as its benefits to health, culture, and religion.

Circumcision surgery is highly beneficial from a medical perspective because:

  • Research has confirmed that it dramatically lowers the risk of HIV and other STDs, including studies conducted by the CDC.
  • It makes personal hygiene easier to manage by streamlining the cleaning process.
  • Medical disorders like paraphimosis, phimosis, balanitis, and balanoposthitis can be prevented and treated with its assistance.

How is circumcision surgery done?

In adults:

At Cutis Hospital, our skilled surgeons use a scalpel to carefully remove the foreskin from the penis during circumcision surgery. To encourage appropriate healing, the skin may then be cauterized or delicately sutured back to the shaft. After that, the area is covered with a protective dressing to prevent infection and aid in healing. The procedure is modified for infants to provide minimal discomfort and tenderness; the foreskin is swiftly removed using special scissors or a certified circumcision tool.

For young children:

The foreskin can be removed quickly and precisely during circumcision surgery with the use of specially-made scissors or an instrument. The infant will be kept comfortable and safe throughout the procedure, thanks to the mild nature of this treatment.

Aftercare

Some swelling and bruises around the penis are normal after circumcision surgery.

How to handle this: Put an ice pack in the groin area. To help with swelling reduction, use an ice pack on the area there. For ten to twenty minutes, leave it in place.

Regularity: To maintain efficient swelling management, reapply the ice pack every two hours.

Keeping the dressings around the penis clean is important to preventing infection and accelerating healing.

Follow up and Recovery

  • Follow up with the surgeons at Cutis 2-3 days after the procedure to remove the dressing
  • In adults, recovery may take 2–3 weeks
  • Return to work after one week or longer
  • Normal physical activities, including exercise,, 4 weeks after the surgery
  • Sexual intercourse or masturbation after six weeks or longer

    • Foreskin may be excised shorter or longer that what is necessary
    • Foreskin may fail to heal properly
    • Remaining foreskin may become reattached to the end of penis requiring minor surgical repair.

At Cutis, we have skilled surgeons who can avoid such complications during the surgical procedure.

    In Infants,

It may take 7-10 days for the circumcised area to heal. Our surgeons/nurses will provide instructions before discharge on how to reduce the discomfort. A child may remain fussy for a few days after the procedure.

    In Adults,

Complete recovery from the procedure may take 2-3 weeks. You may become unable to go to work for one week or longer depending upon your overall health condition. It may take four weeks for an adult to resume routine activities or perform strenuous physical activities. It is prudent to avoid sexual intercourse or masturbation for six weeks after the procedure.
