What causes congenital breast deformities?

Congenital breast deformity is the abnormal development of the immature breast bud on the chest. It is predetermined in utero. It has not been possible to specify a factor that is responsible for this deformity.

  • An underlying genetic condition may be responsible for extremely small breasts or large breasts along with the absence of breast development.
  • Tuberous/tubular breasts are conical in shape instead of being round. A skin deficiency that occurs during development at the bottom, medial or lateral portion of the breast is responsible for this condition.

Congenital breast conditions

Congenital breast problems result from abnormal development of the breasts. There are various conditions, such as

  • Breast asymmetry resulting from Poland’s Syndrome
  • Tuberous/tubular breasts
  • Extremely small or large breasts

    FAQ's

This is a congenital deformity that affects the development of the chest wall on one side of the body. A British anatomist Sir Alfred Poland described this deformity at first in 19th century.

The physical deformities associated with the Poland’s syndrome are subjective. However, the patients suffering from this congenital breast deformity may notice the following abnormalities.

    • Underdeveloped or absent pectoralis muscles (chest muscle) on one side of the body and webbing of the fingers (cutaneous syndactyly) on the same side of the body.
    • In women, nipple, areola and underlying breast tissues are either underdeveloped or missing.
    • Missing armpit hair.
    • Missing or elevated shoulder blade.
    • Underdeveloped ribcage.

At Cutis, reconstructive surgery is performed in order to rectify the deformities of Poland syndrome. The chest wall is rebuilt using either the existing chest-wall muscle or muscle from another part of the body. Experienced cosmetic surgeons of Cutis can also rectify the deformed shoulder blades.

The missing or underdeveloped breast tissues are also rebuilt through cosmetic surgery. The corrective surgeries are performed on a woman who has stopped growing physically in order to prevent any asymmetry between the size and characteristics of both breasts. If the nipple/areola is absent, then therapeutic tattooing is performed in order to create the shapes of these body-parts.

If the breast tissues do not proliferate properly during puberty, then the breasts appear tubular in shape with a wide areola. This congenital deformity is also known as breast hypoplasia.

In women with tuberous breasts, the breast bud becomes constricted in its position and forms a narrow base to the breasts. The appearance of the Tuberous/Tubular breasts varies from one patient to another.

Some patients may have mild narrowing of the breasts’ inferior part whilst others may have severe constriction of the breast bud resulting in markedly tubular shape of the breasts. There may even be asymmetry between the shapes of both ‘Tuberous’ breasts of a woman.

At Cutis, breast augmentation surgery is performed in order to rectify the shape of the breasts.

    • At first, the constricted breast tissues are surgically released.
    • A small incision is made into the breasts in order to insert either a breast implant or tissue expander.
    • These procedures are performed under general anaesthesia.
    • A second surgical procedure is performed if tissue expanders have been used. A breast implant is placed after removing the tissue expander through this second procedure.
    • Mastopexy is performed to modify the appearance of nipples.

Macromastia (breast hypertrophy) is a congenital breast deformity which becomes apparent once a woman reaches puberty and develops extremely large breasts. In women with macromastia, breasts are disproportionately larger than other parts of the body. The women suffering from macromastia may experience the following health problems.

    • Pain and strain of upper back and neck
    • Shoulder grooving caused by bra straps
    • Difficulty participating in sports or other physical activities due to interference caused by the breast tissues
    • Skin rash underneath or between the breasts

At Cutis, skilled cosmetic surgeons perform ‘reduction mammoplasty’ in order to reduce the breasts’ size and to ensure the best possible aesthetic outcome. Our expert surgeons make sure that there is symmetry in shapes and sizes of both breasts after the reduction procedure. The primary objective of this procedure is to achieve a breast’s size that is in proportion with a patient’s overall body-shape.

    During the procedure,

    • Excess breast tissues along with the skin and fat are surgically removed
    • The areola is reduced in size and is repositioned (if necessary)

Minor asymmetries in the shape/size/position/droop of the breasts may be noticed in many women. However, there may be significant asymmetry noticed between the size, shape or position of both breasts due to having Tuberous breasts or suffering from the Poland’s syndrome.

At Cutis, our surgeons determine the suitable surgical technique for the correction of breasts’ asymmetry depending upon the reason behind this problem. We can inform you regarding the type of surgical procedure that is ideal for the correction of your breasts’ asymmetry after learning about the type of your congenital breast deformity and after performing medical imaging tests.

The right time to perform the corrective surgical procedure for the congenital breast problems depends upon a patient’s overall health condition along with other factors. At Cutis, a cosmetic surgeon may determine the correct time to perform the procedure after the completion of breast growth, as fewer surgical procedures may need to be performed on the breast in this scenario. However, you have to book a consultation for correct information.
